During the just concluded Anambra Governorship Election, a video made rounds online which showed an old woman where she rejected money allegedly given to her to vote for a political party in Anambra governorship election.

They were heard saying “we don’t want APC, they’ve been bad to us”. A young man who was allegedly sharing money in the area was also told to leave the polling unit.

The woman, a native of Ukwulu in Dunukofia Local Government Area, turned down an offer from a representative of a political party who was escorted by security agents.

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has given N1 million to the woman who refused a N5,000 cash-for-vote bribe during the state’s recently concluded governorship election, which Professor Chukwuma Soludo won.

She insisted in the viral video that, even though she didn’t have N5,000, she would never accept any gratification that would force her to vote against her conscience.

Commending the woman, the governor-elect, Soludo, said: “I summarise the action of the woman of Ukwulu, who rejected N5,000 to influence her voting, as a metaphor for the spirit of Anambra.

“The woman said ‘I am poor; I don’t have any money in my pocket, but I won’t take N5000’.“That is the spirit of Anambra and her action is the resilience of the Anambra spirit.”
