On Thursday, the Rivers State government appeared to withdraw the criminal case it had filed against former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, the All Progressives Congress (APC) state governorship candidate Tonye Cole, and others.

During Amaechi’s tenure as governor, the government accused them of selling government assets and diverting the proceeds worth billions of naira.

When the case was reopened for a ruling on the legality of a private lawyer prosecuting the case, the state government’s lawyer, Prof. Zaccheus Adangor, who is also the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, informed the court that he was withdrawing the suit.

The lawyer to the APC, Amaechi and Cole contended that withdrawing the suit was an abuse of court process and prayed the judge to dismiss the criminal charges, if the suit must be withdrawn.

After listening to the arguments of the counsel to the parties, the presiding judge, Justice Okogbule Gbasam, struck out the suit and the charges against the APC and others.
