A fire broke out in an illegal local refinery known as Kpofire in the Rumuekpe town of Rivers State’s Emohua Local Government Area, killing over 25 people.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on Thursday.

The fire started when a pipe exploded near the illicit refinery.

However, the leader of a local vigilante organization in the area, Frank Nwazimutor, who corroborated the occurrence, stated he only counted four dead bodies from his own village alone, implying that the fire may have harmed more people than previously reported.

“About 22 individuals were present,” he claims, “but not all of them were burned to death.”

He stated that while the neighborhood has remained quiet, tensions are high in the forest where the fire broke out.

The vigilante leader, on the other hand, blamed the growing trend of illicit refineries on a lack of job options.

The Rivers State Police Command has yet to issue a statement in response to the occurrence.
