Anambra 2021; Deputy Governor Decamps to APC.

Nkem Okeke, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Given that the governorship election in Anambra State is planned for November 6, the deputy governor’s defection may be viewed as a significant political blow to APGA, the state’s ruling party. However, the Leadership of Apga has long stated that the defection of Nkem Okeke is “of no Consequence”

Barrister Tex Okechukwu, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, said in a statement that the Deputy Governor’s defection was long anticipated since he had been resentful of his inability to clinch the party’s governorship ticket for the November election.

According to him, “The deputy governor had thought that the governor and the party were going to hand over the governorship ticket of the party in the last primary to him on a platter.“When that didn’t happen he started behaving abnormally, even to the point of insubordination and dereliction of duties.”

Meanwhile Mr Okeke was received by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to the outlet.

Mala Buni, the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman and Yobe State Governor, and Hope Uzodinma escorted him to the Presidential Villa.

Mr. Uzodinma is the head of the Anambra campaign council of the APC. A photo from the meeting at the estate showed Mr Buhari, Governor Uzodinma, and Mr Okeke all holding an APC flag at the same time.

Before today, there was a claim that Mr Okeke had defected to the APC, but the deputy governor did not publicly respond to the rumour.

The APC appears to be doing well in Anambra since former senator Andy Uba became the party’s governorship candidate, albeit under dubious circumstances.

Six state legislators changed parties from the APGA to the APC. Stella Oduah, a state senator, joined the APC after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party.
