2023: Presidency Should be Zoned to South-East for equity, Says Catholic bishop

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale-Martins, declared on Friday that it would be justified to zone the Nigerian president to the Southeast in the 2023 general election.

Adewale-Martins, a visitor at the ongoing 2021 Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWON) in Lagos, stated that the president should be from the Igbo-speaking region of the country for the purpose of equity and justice.

Addressing reporters at the event’s venue, ST. Leo’s Church in Ikeja, Lagos, Adewale-Martins stated that, with the exception of the southeast zone, other zones of the country have received their due share of the highest political positions.

The gospel preacher advocated for a truly federal structure as a solution to the country’s never-ending agitations for self-actualization among its diverse ethnic ethnicities.

“There is nothing wrong with the federal system of government as stipulated by the founding fathers, but the way it is being practiced in the Nigeria polity is the deformity of the society.

“If well practice it well, it is meant to engender healthy competition by the federating units, just as we see it being practice in the US where we copied it from and others.

“The disenchantment of the citizens to the state from time to time speaks volume of our dysfunctional system of federalism laced with the Nigeria factorn as against the true practice,” he said.
