Covid-19 in Alberta may not be any different from what it is in other parts of Canada.

The province might have declared that the worst of the pandemic was over — at the start of summer — but cases continue to surge. Experts say Alberta’s fourth wave of COVID-19 mirrors the beginnings of previous two spikes – Aug 26, 2021

Covid-19 in Alberta Causes 29 deaths, Including Fully Vaccinated Patients.

The province of Alberta reported 29 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, as well as 1,519 new cases of the disease, local News reported on Tuesday.

The report say Some of these individuals were twice vaccinated and had pre-existing health issues that impaired their immune systems, but the vast majority were not vaccinated at all.

These figures could have been significantly different, making the losses much more painful for those who have been left behind.

Jason Copping, the new Health Minister who was sworn in Tuesday in a cabinet portfolio swap with Tyler Shandro, said at a news conference that he will focus on permanently increasing baseline hospital capacity, educating vaccine-hesitant Albertans to increase vaccination rates, and assisting the health system in better preparing for future COVID-19 waves.

Alberta Government seeks Help from Ottawa

Alberta’s UCP government has asked Ottawa for assistance in reducing the strain on the province’s health-care system, which is already overcrowded with COVID-19 patients.

In a letter dated Tuesday, Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver publicly requested assistance and an immediate meeting with federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair.

He requested that the federal government offer aero-medical evacuation capability to move patients out of Alberta, as well as intensive care unit (ICU) registered nurses and respiratory therapists to help with Alberta’s critical care response.

Alberta’s ICU capacity is currently at 87 percent, but without additional surge beds — which health-care workers say are understaffed — the province would be at 169% of its baseline capacity.

According to a report on CBC news, there are 222 COVID-19 patients in the province’s ICUs. The report also says that COVID-19 has infected approximately 1,000 Albertans, and the province has detected over 20,900 active cases.

Across the province, surgeries have been canceled in order to free up health-care staff to deal with the situation.
Notably, Health Minister Tyler Shandro did not sign the letter.
