According to Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough, workers who lose their jobs due to noncompliance with company COVID-19 immunization policies are unlikely to be eligible for employment insurance (EI) in Canada.

This law, according to Qualtrough, does not apply in cases where someone has a medical exemption or a “legitimate cause” for not being vaccinated.

“It’s a condition of employment that hasn’t been met,” Qualtrough told CBC’s . “And the employer choosing to terminate someone for that reason would make that person ineligible for EI.”I can tell you that’s the advice I’m getting, and that’s the advice I’ll move forward with.”

This law, according to Qualtrough, does not apply in cases where someone has a medical exemption or a “legitimate cause” for not being vaccinated.

According to the website of Employment and Social Development Canada, EI is offered to “any individuals who lose their jobs through no fault of their own (for example, due to a shortage of work, seasonal or mass lay-offs) and are available for and able to work, but can’t find a job.”EI pays 55% of most people’s typical weekly earnings up to a maximum of $595 per week.

Qualtrough’s remarks come at a time when many employers require employees to be vaccinated. The ruling body of Parliament has approved a mandatory vaccination policy for members of Parliament who do not have a medical exemption.

The Toronto Police Service also said that unvaccinated officers will be placed on unpaid leave.

Qualtrough stressed that this is not yet a definite public policy decision because the government is currently in caretaker mode following the recent federal election and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not yet announced a new cabinet. On October 26th, he will do so.
