Alberta ICU Admissions Set New Record.

As Covid-19 continues to buffet the world and Canada in particular, the health system in Alberta has set yet another record for the number of patients requiring critical care.

An Alberta Health Services (AHS) spokeswoman said in a statement Monday morning that there are presently 312 patients in critical care units (ICUs), with the vast majority of them being COVID-19 positive.

According to the statement, AHS continues to create additional ICU spaces and redeploy staff to meet patient demand, including the addition of 38 surge beds in the last week.

During the same time period, the number of ICU patients climbed by 11%, according to AHS.

Alberta currently has 370 ICU beds, including 197 surge spots.

According to AHS, ICU capacity, including surge beds, is at 84%.According to AHS, the Calgary zone contains 133 ICU beds, including 67 extra spots.

It is now working at 80% of its surge capacity.There are 158 ICU beds in the Edmonton zone, with an extra 86 places. It is now working at 87% of its surge capacity.
