IGP Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, has recommended that DCP Abba Kyari, the Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), be suspended from the Nigeria Police Force until the outcome of an ongoing internal inquiry into him.

Last week, DCP Abba Kyari was indicted by a US court in California for suspected involvement in an internet fraud scheme involving Ramonu Abba, also known as Hushpuppi.

Hushpuppi is currently standing trials in court having been accused of defrauding a Qatari businessman who was attempting to open a school in Qatar.

DCP Abba Kyari has since denied any involvement in the said internet fraud whose victim was said to be a Qatari businessman.

However, the IGP wrote to the Police Service Commission on July 31, 2021, in a letter signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba, and dated July 31, 2021.

The recommendation for the officer’s suspension, according to the IGP, is consistent with the Force’s internal disciplinary procedures.

He revealed through the letter that “The suspension is also expected to create an enabling environment for the NPF Special Investigation Panel to carry out its investigations into the weighty allegations against DCP Abba Kyari without interference.”

“The suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer,” He stated.
