EndSARS Anniversary; Nigerians Mark Anniversary Despite Police Warning

In October of last year, spontaneous protests erupted across the country against police violence, particularly by members of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

The EndSARS movement gathered momentum quickly both locally and internationally. People donated massively to the movement including the CEO of twitter. For weeks and months, #endsars trended on major social media platforms in Nigeria.

However, the protests turned bloody on October 20, 2020, when military and police officers opened fire on protestors in Lagos.

Hoodlums attacked and injured many demonstrators in Abuja, the nation’s capital. They also plundered warehouses, set fire to over 18 autos, and vandalized over 12 vehicles.

In response to the outrage, President Muhammadu Buhari abolished the Special Anti-Robbery Squad police unit.


On October 19, 2020, the President accused the demonstrators of attempting to promote disorder and warned that the government would not accept such behavior.

EndSARS Anniversary; At least Two protesters Arrested.


The police had warned the organizers and attendees of the commemoration protests for the EndSARS Anniversary that they will be arrested and prosecuted if they follow ahead with their plans.

To make good with their threat, at least two people were apprehended by police in Lagos state at the Lekki tollgate today.

This comes as Nigerians prepare to mark the one-year anniversary of the violent EndSARS rally on October 20.

According to the BBC, one of those detained claimed to be a journalist, while the other attacked the tollgate with a sign, intending to stage a demonstration.

The two people were transported in police black maria vans.

On Tuesday, the state police command issued a statement advising people of the state not to stage any public protests. Only indoor and virtual events will be permitted, according to the statement.
