Scores of people are believed to have died in a stampede just before the start of a program organized by a new generation church in Port Harcourt, Rivers State’s capital.

Despite the fact that the ‘Kings Assembly’ church is located in the GRA axis of the metropolis, the event was held at the Polo Club in the Rivers State capital to accommodate the usual large congregation.

The church had invited members of the public to come and receive gift items and food for its fourth anniversary, so the crowd had outstretched the venue.

According to Allwell Ene, a popular Port Harcourt based Journalist attached to Classic fm, the crowd, which began arriving around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, pushed open a small gate to gain entry, resulting in a stampede.

He said wrote on his Facebook page,

“Black Saturday in Port Harcourt
Scores die in stampede“

“Kings Assembly invited members of the public to come for gift items and food items. This is their fourth edition“

“Some arrived since yesterday, others arrived this morning 6.30am for an event that was supposed to start by 9am“

“Some persons who were supposed to have a sports session arrived at about 8am.. opened the small gate.. the crowd saw an opportunity… pushed in and got stampeded“

He put the number of people that died at 31.

However, there was a stampede because some people arrived at the venue yesterday and some this morning just to be among the first to gain access to the sharing, and 31 people met their Waterloo.

The hunger, starvation, and poverty are so severe that some people have decided to travel and even sleep in order to obtain those items.
