Tragedy; Truck Kills Several Students In Lagos.

A hit-and-run truck driver crushed several students to death along Ogunusi Road, near the Grammar School bus stop in Lagos State.

It was discovered that the students were walking home after school and wanted to cross the street when the truck ran them over.

The driver was reportedly pursued to the Ogba area before being apprehended by the police.

Following the frustration of not catching the truck drivers, The angry youths went and burnt the truck.

The mob, comprising angry youths and passersby, also clashed with policemen at the scene who tried to maintain law and order.

It was also gathered that the mob attacked some policemen and descended on officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, even as police officers fired teargas canisters to disperse the mob.

“I’ve never seen anything so horrific in my life.” I counted about 15 students who were lifeless on the floor. “It happened around 2 p.m.,” an eye witness said.

Another eyewitness said ” I almost pupu in my pants today, It’s infront of our school o”. The eyewitness who also described the day as “black Tuesday” in Lagos said that three siblings of the same parents were among the killed students.

The eyewitness also said the police had to start firing bullets in the air because other students and residents started protesting.

“Our Men were not Involved in the Accident” – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps has stated that its officers were not involved in the crash that occurred on Ogunusi Road near the Grammar School Bus Stop in Lagos State.

As a result of the incident, motorists abandoned the road and stranded commuters trekked long distances.

According to a statement issued by the state’s Sector Commander, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the articulated truck lost control, killing a “unverified number of students” and injuring many more.

The statement was titled, ‘FRSC Not Involved In The Crash That Claimed The Lives Of School Children Along Ogunnusi Road, Ojodu: FRSC Lagos Sector Commander’.

He explained that the men of FRSC were called upon by passersby to help intervene after the crash had happened.The statement read in part,

“About seven (7) of the victims were rescued and immediately taken to Lagos State Emergency Centre Ojota by FRSC personnel while another road user helped in carrying about seven (7) also to the same emergency centre.

“The general public should disregard the disgruntled information been circulated by some unscrupulous element that FRSC men caused the crash.

“We want to place on record that our men were not in any way involved in the cause of the crash as patrol activities was not ongoing along that axis as at the time of the crash.”

Ogungbemide commiserated with the families of the deceased that God will grant them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.

He also prayed that the injured will recuperate fast.
