The House of Representatives has requested that the Inspector General of Police take over the investigation into the alleged murder of Sylvester Oromoni, a Dowen College student in Lekki, Lagos State.

The call came as a result of the unanimous approval of a motion by Rep. Unyime Idem (PDP-Akwa Ibom) in plenary on Tuesday.

The green chambers demanded that all those named in the case be thoroughly investigated and that social workers be sent to all boarding schools to prevent future occurrences.

Idem, who proposed the motion, stated that social media had been flooded with reports of the death of Oromoni, a 12-year-old boy who died on Nov. 27.

He claimed that Oromoni died as a result of multiple internal injuries sustained while being beaten by fellow students at Dowen College in Lekki, Lagos State, for refusing to join a cult group.

Karen-Happuch Akpagher, a 14-year-old student at Premier Academy, Lugbe, Abuja, died in June 2021 after being sexually assaulted, he added.

Six months later, there has been no news of the suspect being arrested for prosecution, according to the lawmaker.

According to Idem, in the aftermath of the reports, some Nigerians have spoken out about their traumatic experiences in boarding schools, citing a public analysis that described bullying as a major pandemic in boarding schools.

The House of Representatives condemned recent inhumane treatment and abuses in boarding schools and urged the Ministry of Education to establish guidelines for the operation of boarding schools throughout the country.
