She described fuel subsidies as a “major drain and waste” on the country’s economy, adding that it is critical that the country exit the fuel subsidy regime.

According to the finance minister, the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) provides for the deregulation of petroleum products, which will take effect in July 2022.

She also stated that federal government is planning to deploy compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles as an alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles.

In her words “In making our plans at least in the 2022 budget, we assumed that this deregulation will take effect from July 2022,”.

“While the act was passed. The president said there would be a one-year timeframe within which implementation will be made, moving from the status quo to the provisions of PIA.

“We assume that by June we will be able to exit the fuel subsidy, and we have made provision only up till June in the budget for fuel subsidy.

“And it is important that we exit this subsidy. It is costing us a significant amount of resources that we could have applied for education, health and critical infrastructure. It is a major waste and a major drain on the economy.” she said.

How CNG Vehicles work.

Vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) operate similarly to gasoline-powered vehicles with spark-ignited internal combustion engines.

The engine works in the same way that a gasoline engine does. Natural gas is typically stored in a fuel tank, or cylinder, at the rear of the vehicle. The CNG fuel system transports high-pressure gas from the fuel tank through the fuel lines to a pressure regulator, which reduces the pressure to a level compatible with the engine fuel injection system.

Finally, the fuel enters the intake manifold or combustion chamber, where it is mixed with air and compressed before being ignited by a spark plug.
