FG Approves 14 Days Paternity Leave

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, authorized a 14-day paternity leave on Wednesday to allow fathers to fully bond with their newborn or adopted child.

Paternity leave is available to men in the federal civil service.

Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, the Federation’s Head of Civil Service, said this while briefing State House Correspondents at the end of the Council’s weekly meeting, which was held at the First Lady’s Conference Room, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Federation’s Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who was flanked by the Minister of Information and Culture, said that paternity leave was allowed for men when their spouses had new kids.

She stated that bonding was essential in assisting the newly born or adopted infant to appropriately bond with the father at an early stage as the baby bonds with others.

In her words, “We’ve also gotten approval to include paternity leave. This is something that is new. And this is something that the unions in the service asked that we include, and luckily, we’ve been able to include it.

“We’ve also been able to ensure that leave now is calculated based on working days, not on calendar days, that also has been approved. “We also have introduced the transition from paper service to a digital service. So these are some of the new things that are in the new PSR that has just been approved by the federal executive council.”
