The first half-hour was underwhelming, as both teams tried to break down the other. ‘La Blaugrana’ dominated possession but produced little to test Thibaut Courtois.

Ansu Fati was dangerous for the hosts, attempting to become only the fourth player in the 21st century to score in his first two ‘El Clásico’ starts, and would have claimed an assist had Sergino Dest not wildly blazed over a shot from 12-yards, unmarked in the box.

Barça’s wastefulness proved to be their undoing, as they fell victim to Real Madrid’s counter-attacking tactics and fell behind before halftime.

Following a set piece, Vincius Jnior and Rodrygo advanced the ball with speed and precision to David Alaba, who shot his first goal for the club past Marc-André ter Stegen into the top right corner from the edge of the box.
