With less than 24 hours till the Anambra State governorship election on Saturday, the Inspector General of Police has dismissed the Deputy Inspector General, DIG Joseph Egbunike, as the team’s leader.

When approached about the situation, Force Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba, acknowledged that DIG Egbunike had stood down, but no cause for the dismissal of the experienced senior officer who is an Anambra State indigene was offered.

DIG Egbunike has recently been replaced by DIG Zaki Ahmed, the Acting Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations.

While announcing the abrupt change of baton, DSP Nkeiruka Nwode, Public Relations Officer attached to the Anambra Poll Monitoring Team, stated that the move will not disrupt the conduct of the election.

However, some analysts believe that the decision to remove DIG Egbunike is motivated by concerns that, as a son of the state , the gubernatorial gladiators will point accusing fingers at him regardless of who wins or loses.

Recall that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, recently assured residents of adequate security in Anambra, stressing that police operatives have no reason to compromise after being given their allowances ahead of the special duty.
